Mele Kalama-Kingma

Dietitian - RDN, LD

Aloha!

My name is Mele Kalama-Kingma, and I am proud to be born and raised in Kailua, where my passion for wellness, local foods, and the beauty of nature was shaped by my upbringing. Growing up by the beach in a family of fishermen and watermen, I learned early on the importance of being connected to both land and sea for joy and sustenance. My grandmother, a dedicated hula teacher, was a profound influence in my life. Her passing due to complications from diabetes deeply impacted me and inspired my commitment to helping others live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

I pursued my academic journey at Loyola Marymount University and the University of Hawaii at Manoa, majoring in Human Nutrition, Food Science, and Indigenous Public Health. My graduate studies focused on strengths-based approaches, demonstrating how positive connections with one’s environment, culture, music, dance, and community events can predict healthier outcomes. This experience ignited a deep desire to share knowledge and empower others.

Professionally, I have served as a cultural nutritionist, dietitian, and personal trainer in Native Hawaiian health community centers and at a nature preserve dedicated to helping local families reconnect with the land and embrace native foods. After the birth of my first child, I recognized a need for body care products that truly nourish the skin—“food” for the skin—and successfully ran a small business in this space for over a decade. Now, as a mother of three active athletes, I am passionate about sports nutrition and fueling their bodies for peak performance.

Outside of work, I love surfing, long walks on the beach, cheering on my kids at volleyball games, enjoying family dinners, and traveling together. My approach is rooted in strengths and connection, always choosing foods and practices that bring both joy and nourishment.

Mahalo nui!
